Long Elementary is a neighborhood school steeped in tradition. Since the school opened in 1960, it has maintained a strong sense of community and dedication to excellence in education.

In just under 3 years, the student population has increased dramatically. Student demographics have grown increasingly diverse as many young families move into Long’s attendance area. Just under 10 percent of students are English Language Learners, representing more than 16 nationalities. Long has also seen a 15 percent increase in the number of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Regardless of income and background, all students excel because Long is committed to providing stellar education and meeting the needs of the whole child.

Long is fortunate to be part of the No. 1 K-12 school district in Missouri for student achievement. Highly qualified teachers and staff give 110 percent every day and pride themselves on knowing every child and creating an environment where students can imagine ... believe ... achieve. In 2009, Long was named a National School of Character, and the school is currently in its third year of embracing Stephen Covey’s The Leader in Me program.

Long’s success also comes from support of strong families who volunteer in the building on a daily basis. Parents assist with small group activities and are available on a moment’s notice. In 2013, Long’s Parent Teacher Organization created an outdoor learning space that not only functions as additional classroom space, but also allows students to learn about sustainability and stewardship.
