South Forsyth Middle School: Embracing Innovation, Technology and Collaboration. The concepts embraced by everyone who is a part of the South Forsyth Middle School (SFMS) community lead to a staff that feels valued, a student body that feels safe and inspired, and a parent community that feels secure in the knowledge that their children’s education is a top priority. Rigorous standards and expectations are embraced by students and staff, with over 99 percent of students meeting or exceeding expectations in annual state competency tests. A combination of opportunities such as inquiry-based learning, student organizations, club activities, and sports enable students to discover their passions. Implementation of the data team process and adoption of innovative strategies, such as the University of Kansas Strategic Instruction Model® (SIM), set SFMS apart from other schools. Data teams require collaboration and risk-free analysis of teacher and student performance. To produce students that are well-prepared for the future, learning strategies are taught in Study Skills classes and reinforced in all academic courses. The use of technology enhances instruction, with students encouraged to use their own mobile devices, along with strategic technology applications that produce a rigorous, engaging learning environment. Technology supports collaboration at all levels including teachers and students, peer-to-peer, and school to parent. Throughout all academic, extra-curricular and community activities, the willingness to try new things is embraced. Trust exists among all stakeholders, enabling them to embrace new ideas, to ensure continuous improvement of teaching and learning, and to prepare students for a bright future.
