Tibby Elementary is located in a quiet neighborhood in the heart of Compton, California. Students at Tibby are exposed to a standards driven curriculum that focuses primarily on full mastery of essential literacy skills. We have adopted a learning through literacy approach that puts innovative and engaging practices in place to ensure that every student becomes a fluent reader and a proficient writer by the end of each school year. Our school-wide literacy focus involves meeting the needs of each student through small reading groups, peer assisted reading assignments, an individual reading plan, a comprehensive school-wide writing approach, and intervention services for every scholar at our school that reads below grade level. Our scholars are expected to produce engaging and coherent writing across the curriculum using the techniques that they learn during our intensive 60 minute daily writing block. Every student on our campus is expected to become an academic scholar. The strength of our excellence is vested in the strong collaboration that exists between the teachers and the staff members that work outside of the classroom to provide our scholars the support that they need to achieve mastery of the standards. All support staff members assist with providing intervention services to our struggling readers, as well as occupying program leader positions in our enrichment programs. Teamwork, accountability and building relationships are essential parts of our school culture. At Tibby, we take collective responsibility for the success of all students. We make no exceptions and we accept no excuses.
