Peterson Elementary School is a PreK-5 school located in Kodiak, Alaska, a community of approximately 14,200 people. We are one of four elementary schools serving the town of Kodiak in the Kodiak Island Borough School District (KIBSD). In 2013-2014, 286 students were enrolled at Peterson in grades Pre K- 5. Approximately 70% of our students are from military families. The focus on a positive school climate is one of our greatest strengths. We believe in teaching behavior expectations, informing students of learning targets, and preparing students for success. As a learning community, we are committed to working in partnership with families to provide a program that addresses the academic, social, physical and emotional needs of students. Our goal is for students to develop as productive individuals, compassionate citizens, effective problem solvers and life-long learners. As part of this commitment, Peterson staff is determined to provide a comprehensive instructional program for all students. We believe that early intervention, effective instruction and engaged students are essential elements in each classroom. Student performance data is reviewed and shared regularly with families during our student led conferences. At Peterson, we share our students’ accomplishments with the broader community. Students participate in a wide variety of field trips, hands on learning opportunities, afterschool enrichment clubs, artist in residence programs and activities that help define our community. As a school, we strive to meet the needs of each child by providing a well balanced learning environment where students can celebrate their all time best.
