At Springfield Local Elementary the teachers are very dedicated to helping each student. The key to Springfield’s successful student performance starts with a loving and compassionate staff that goes beyond the minimum level required to ensure success for all the pupils. The staff holds the belief that all children can learn and encourages them at all times to strive for their individual best. The teachers utilize data to drive instruction and set goals to improve instructional delivery that optimizes student learning. Throughout each day it is common to have teachers approach their peers for instructional advice that creates a collaborative nature promoting instructional excellence. The majority of professional development is held in-house as “teacher experts” lead the way in all areas of the curriculum including math, reading, writing, science and technology.

Another important aspect to Springfield’s success is the balanced literacy program developed using guided reading, leveled books, shared reading, echo-reading, read a-louds and interactive writing. The program has focused on individualizing the reading curriculum for each student by incorporating ideas from Taberski, Fountas and Pinnell, Cunningham, Moser & Boushey, and Ray. Through the creation of this coordinated program, reading scores have improved and the children love to read while being more strategic in their approach. The students make connections and ask questions as they read while drawing inferences and monitoring their understanding. Since implementing this balanced literacy program, the students have shown great gains in reading skills and comprehension due to the support received at an individual level. This reading initiative cultivates growth for struggling readers, as well as, advanced readers, thereby increasing student performance in all educational facets at Springfield Local Elementary.
