NBRS Badge for Harrison High School

Harrison High School - Harrison, NJ

Harrison High School is located in a small culturally diverse, urban community that affords the students the ability to walk to their neighborhood school and develop a strong sense of pride in their community. By developing relationships with teachers, parents and the community, all constituents work toward encouraging students to use higher order thinking to understand complex issues, develop their innate self-efficacy, and become well-adjusted citizens.

HHS is continually assessing and revising its curriculum so that students are guaranteed rigorous coursework aligned to the Common Core and the NJ Core Content Standards. Professional learning opportunities support the educational innovations necessary to maintain the integrity of the curriculum and support college and career readiness.

Teachers consistently use data such as diagnostics, benchmark and common assessments, and standardized test scores to inform their instructional practices. Most significantly, all teachers assess students’ understanding daily through a Grade-A-Day Program. The program assesses students’ understanding by requiring them to apply the knowledge and skills they have learned in authentic ways. This has enabled our staff to monitor and adjust their instruction so that interventions and enhancements can be incorporated into lessons immediately.

The success of Harrison High School can be attributed to the strong bond that the administration and staff have forged with students, parents, and community. Together they have purposefully created a learning environment that supports student achievement.
