Our philosophy, mission, and goals are clearly defined and articulated at Harlan Community High School. Students are provided with an educational program that will help them become productive citizens. We believe that the difference between success and failure, in school and life, is effort and commitment. We also believe that all students should have access to a quality education and that all students should have a choice to continue their education beyond high school. Each student is given the opportunity to maximize his or her potential academically and in our many co-curricular programs.
At Harlan Community High School, the student is at the center of our educational mission. Our staff has focused instructional strategies around Student Centered Classrooms as outlined by the Characteristics of Effective Instruction (Iowa Core Curriculum). Our expectations are high in regard to the students’ work ethic, decorum, and appearance. As a result, our students are well prepared to compete in a world that requires competent, goal-oriented individuals. Every opportunity will be provided to help our students become their individual and collective “best”.
Our school’s motto is, “Joined as one, we get the job done”. We believe our academics, athletics, fine arts programs and students are among our state’s bests. Our 530 students come from eight communities. We share a commitment to excellence and have high expectations for our students and staff. We are proud to be Cyclones.
