Leal’s school motto, "Academic Excellence… A Leal Tradition," is embraced by all stakeholders and is evidenced by our 2013 API score of 972. School-wide, over 93% of our students scored at or above proficient on the ELA portion and over 94% scored at or above proficient on the math portion of the California Standards Tests.
A Visual and Performing Arts magnet, Leal provides a vibrant arts curriculum, from pull-out instruction in musical theater to lessons in studio art in our art center. Our parent community extends its commitment to our success in this area as well, having established the Leal Elementary Arts Program (LEAP) Foundation. LEAP, a non-profit charitable organization, acts as the sole funding source for our magnet program.
In the Leal community, cultural diversity is a celebrated asset. Teachers feature supplemental lessons on cultural traditions such as Chinese New Year in their classrooms while our parents volunteer their time and resources to bring cultural events such as Diwali Night and the LEAP International Showcase to the school. At Leal, our mission to foster academic achievement and to promote tolerance is matched by our commitment to providing our students with a foundation of sound character. Students and staff embrace differences and promote the growth of character through the implementation of the PeaceBuilders® program.
At Leal, we pride ourselves in creating an environment in which students feel safe, are free to take academic and creative "risks," and engage in a constant cycle of curiosity, inquiry, investigation, and imagination. It is our mission to send truly well-rounded, confident, and prepared young people on to the next stage of their education.
