National Blue Ribbon High School Receives High Marks in National Ranking

The Middlesex County (NJ) Academy for Science, Math, and Engineering Technologies, a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School, has received Gold Star status in U.S. News and World Report’s 2014 ranking of the best U.S. public high schools for the second year in a row. Of more than 19,000 high schools profiled by U.S. News and World Report, the Academy was ranked the fourth best high school in New Jersey and among the top 110 high schools in the country.

The Middlesex County Vocational and Technical School District, the first county vocational school district in the nation, hosts seven career and technical education institutions; its Perth Amboy Vocational School received National Blue Ribbon School recognition in 2012.

To celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, here is 2014 National Teacher of the Year responding to an question after his speech at the 2013 NBRS Ceremony. A member of audience asked: “I was wondering if you had a teacher who inspired you, especially in the field of science.” Here’s how Jeff Charbonneau answered:

“I actually had two different inspirations. Okay, I’m lying. I had like a thousand inspirations, but two that really stick out.” Listen to Charbonneau’s response  (3:19) below.

Writer and filmmaker Jennifer Fischer, who co-directed the documentary film Underdogs, about 2011 National Blue Ribbon McGrath Elementary School in Newhall, California, writes a love letter to public schools in a recent issue of the Santa Clara (CA) News. Read “As Summer Draws Near Thank an Educator.” Underdogs, due for completion later this year, showcases the high achievement of students at a school that beat its demographic odds.
