2013 Teacher of the Year Champions “A Nation of Succeeding Schools”

Jeff Charbonneau to Address
NBRS 2013 Ceremony

“Welcome to another day in paradise!” That’s how Board-certified science teacher Jeff Charbonneau, the 2013 National Teacher of the Year, greets his students at Zillah High School (Zillah, WA). A joyful teacher who admits he feels like he hasn’t gone to ‘work’ since he started teaching, Charbonneau, 35,  believes that every student can be a successful STEM learner, given the opportunity and support.

When Charbonneau arrived at Zillah High School in 2001, the school had no science or engineering curricula. Technology classes were held off-site. Calling on volunteer scientists, researchers, and parents, Charbonneau created the Zillah Science Boosters and the Zillah Robot Challenge. Free to any student in the state, the Challenge teaches students to assemble and program their own robots—and compete with other robots at an annual meet. More than 1200 students have taken part since the Challenge began in 2007.

Charbonneau will be a featured speaker at the 2013 Annual National Blue Ribbon Ceremony in Washington, DC, November 18–19.

Today, Zillah’s graduation rate is 95% and nearly every Zillah student graduates with some college credit. Charbonneau has acquired adjunct faculty status with local universities and more than 70 classes at Zillah High School can result in credits from state universities or community colleges. Charbonneau has  a B.S. in Biology and a Masters of Education from Central Washington University and serves as co-president of the Zillah Education Association.

At a Rose Garden ceremony in which President Barack Obama honored Charbonneau and the State Teachers of the Year, Charbonneau said “I firmly believe we are a nation of succeeding schools. It is time to share the message that the students in the United States have some of the best opportunities to succeed. Their teachers are high-quality educators, their districts are pro-active about their educations, and their government is committed to implementing real reform measures.”

The Council of Chief State Officers selected Charbonneau as the 63rd National Teacher of the Year for his passion in making science and engineering exhilarating and accessible to students. The teacher-of-the year program began in 1952 to focus public attention on excellence in teaching. Learn more about the CCSSO Teacher of the Year program.

Great Schools Have Great Principals

logo for "october is national principals month"The National Association of Secondary School Principals and the National Association of Elementary School Principals have declared October 2013 as ‘‘National Principals Month’’ to honor principals’ dedication to students, teachers, and families all year long.

The National Principals Month website contains a host of ideas for celebrating principals this month, including a video contest featuring “props” to principals, links to supporting organizations, first-person accounts by principals about their work, and Twitter threads by and about principals. How is your school celebrating its leaders?

In his special announcement of National Principals Month, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan praised principals for serving as role models of collaboration and communication and for their laser-like focus on student achievement. Secretary Duncan also noted that the first-ever US Department of Education’s Principal Ambassador Fellow will be announced soon. Watch Secretary Duncan’s announcement.

NBRS Principal Named National High School Principal of the Year

Principal Sheila Harrity of Worcester Technical High School (Worcester, MA), a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School, has been named the 2014 National High School Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP)-MetLife Foundation.

Harrity assumed leadership of Worcester Tech in 2006. Although the school occupied a new state-of-the-art building, it was one of the lowest performing schools in Massachusetts. Under Harrity’s leadership, the school effected a dramatic turnaround: student proficiency rates in English and math have risen 61 and 43 percentage points, respectively, to 88% and 78%. The four-year graduation rate, up 17 points, exceeds 96%.

Tapping the expertise of more than 350 industry advisors, Principal Harrity fashioned a vision for Worcester Tech that prepared students to succeed in business, industry, and higher education. Working to improve one academic area at a time, she has increased Advanced Placement courses, expanded technical programs, and fostered dual enrollment opportunities with two-and four-year colleges. More recently, she guided Worcester to become a STEM-focused Innovation School. Worcester Tech earned the MetLife Foundation-NASSP Breakthrough School award in 2011.

Watch a video featuring Principal Harrity.

Worcester Tech’s curriculum features immersive learning through project-based study and real-world application. Students operate a 125-seat restaurant, a salon/ day spa, an automotive center that services 250 vehicles a month, a full-service bank, and a state-approved pre-school. Building trades students built the school’s new “Tufts at Tech” veterinary clinic that provides affordable animal care for low-income families; and have also built a multi-family LEED-certified house for low-income Worcester residents. Through the Environmental Tech program, students provide the city with land maintenance and water testing services. Principal Harrity believes that the school’s success and the city and region’s success are intertwined.

October is Connected Educators Month

connected“In a country where we expect free Wi-Fi with our coffee, shouldn’t we demand it in our schools? Shouldn’t we want that for our children’s education?”

President Barack Obama raised these questions at the launch of the ConnectED Initiative, aimed at connecting 99% of America’s students to high-speed wireless Internet in five years. Connected Educators is an initiative of the Office of Educational Technology at the U.S. Department of Education. Watch a video about Connected Educators by the USDE Office of Ed Tech.

This month is “Connected Educators Month.” Are you a “connected educator”? Do you leverage technology to connect with other educators and resources? How do you use those connections to improve teaching and learning at your school? Follow the international Twitter conversation at #ce13.

The U.S. Department of Education has challenged educators across the U.S. and around the globe to host or attend a myriad of virtual and live events—from Tweets and podcasts to live conferences—to bring more educators and stakeholders into the world of digital connection and resource sharing.

To get involved, check out the calendar of Connected Educator events or submit an event. Visit the Connected Educators website to get the resource toolkit and learn more. And join the Connected Educators Month Facilitators Google+ Community, a public forum where educators share resources, ideas, events, questions and successes. Other actions:

  • Start tweeting using the #CE13 hashtag to share how you’re a connected educator.
  • Invited at least three colleagues who aren’t currently connected to create social media accounts.
  • Sign up for an EdConnectr account. This is a great way to meet colleagues who share common interests, goals, or have a skillset of value to you.
