Revolutionizing School Meals

The Active Learning Elementary School (TALES)
New York City Department of Education
Queens, NY

school exteriorThe Active Learning Elementary School (TALES), Pubic School 244 in Queens, New York was founded on the belief that giving students high quality nutrition and physical play and teaching them about healthy choices will benefit their academic achievement. Since it opened in 2008, student attendance and state test results are up and students seem calmer and happier. In 2012, prompted by students who had learned to read nutritional labels, the school cut back on sugar and began testing fully plant-based meals. In a pair of podcasts, Principal Robert Groff, III, describes how nutritious food and meaningful play help students succeed. Download the TALES Nutrition and Student Success transcript.
