Altoona Intermediate School - Altoona, WI
Altoona Intermediate School, student relationships and high academic expectations.
Made up of fourth and fifth grades, Altoona Intermediate School is located in Altoona, WI, a small suburban community in west central Wisconsin. The Altoona Intermediate School community is a community of learners that exemplifies growth mindset. Staff are passionate about their own learning, about collaboration, and about researching best practices in teaching in order to differentiate for all students. The school fully embraces the concept of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). General classroom and special education teachers are part of the PLC team, and various models of co-teaching are used in our school. Full implementation of all of these practices has resulted in exemplary results in closing gaps.
Every day that children come to Altoona Intermediate School, their learning is being measured in a variety of ways. Our philosophy of learning is that it is fluid, and therefore we are cautious about labeling students as performing below or above grade level. We have created systems and layers of support within the universal instruction, in the general education classroom setting, for all students, and believe that all students are first and foremost the responsibility of the classroom teacher.
What sets the Altoona Intermediate School apart from many other schools is our philosophy of special education and our team approach. When we say our students, we mean it. We build relationships with students, design units, and build lessons to create student ownership in learning. We invest in each other and the atmosphere in our building is happy and celebratory for students and staff. This in turn has led to success.
