Carter City Elementary School - Grayson, KY

Exemplary is the best word to describe Carter City Elementary School (CCES). Through a collaborative approach and a system of shared instructional beliefs, this small rural school has been able to maximize resources to overcome extreme barriers. We believe that our professional learning system has been instrumental in our success. Teacher participation in learning academies, lesson studies, and book studies has led to the implementation of a common language that has brought unity to our staff. Instructional expectations are understood and celebrated among all staff. Explicit Direct Instruction (EDI), our school-wide instructional delivery model, is part of those expectations. EDI is research-based and proven effective for all students. Through this structure, students are provided with the initial instruction from the teacher. Using the Gradual Release of Responsibility, teachers conduct a guided section of the lesson before releasing to independence. This model provides both support and scaffolded learning for students.

Additionally, the faculty and staff at CCES hold to the belief that all students will meet the expectations that are set for them. Therefore, students are encouraged to be "exemplary" in all aspects of life. This focus on the whole child has led to trustworthy relationships and positive learning environments. Lastly, our school relies on our parental and community partners to assist in helping our students succeed. Our partners collaborate through direct support as volunteers, participation in after-school programs and initiatives, and celebration of student successes. We believe it takes everyone focused on our students to truly be exemplary.
