Monterey Vista Elementary School is a K-6 Elementary School with an enrollment of 556 students. We are part of the Garvey Elementary School District and is located in Monterey Park, California. Our student body population is diverse with 73 percent Asian American (includes Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Burmese, Indonesian and Khmer), 25 percent Latino and 2 percent White, multiracial. In addition, our English Language Learner comprises 44 percent of our student population. The school is also located in a low socioeconomic community with over 80 percent of our students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. One of our major accomplishment is all of our subgroups have met their growth target annually based on the state's Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) for the past three years. Monterey Vista is also ranked in the top 7 percent among over 5000 elementary schools in California. Monterey Vista utilizes technology-based supplemental programs in language arts and mathematics to target students who have not met proficiency status as indicated on both formal and informal assessment data. One of our successes is that teachers collaborate within and across grade levels in identifying both grade and grade level span needs and this leads to school wide trends. One year, Monterey Vista identified listening skills as a school wide need. During that school year, every teacher developed classroom activities and carved out a time during the instructional day to target and enhance students' listening abilities across all content areas.
