Fruit Street School - Bangor, ME

Third grade students combining love of books and engineering.

Third grade students combining love of books and engineering.

The students at Fruit Street School, the largest of Bangor's five PreK-3 neighborhood schools, are excited about learning. They arrive every morning smiling, happy, and eager to start their day. The staff works tirelessly to develop and maintain strong working relationships with students, families, and the community to ensure that communication is ongoing and reciprocal. The vision of academic excellence for all promotes an environment where it's cool to be smart.

Research shows differentiated instruction through the workshop model reaches more students and moves them forward at a faster pace. All teachers at Fruit Street use the workshop model for the instruction of literacy and math.

Guided by the principal, all staff analyze student and school data to drive instruction and develop classroom and individual student goals. Fruit Street has a population of students who have exceeded the standards beyond what was expected, as well as a core of students with severe academic struggles. The faculty realize that having such extremes in the classroom requires thoughtful and deliberate differentiation, and the vastness of abilities has driven professional development in an effort to challenge every student.

Accelerating students at the moment they're ready to be challenged meets the expectations of parents, who have a strong understanding of educational pedagogy and high expectations for their children. Parents are actively involved in the school and expect the highest quality education. Everyone associated with Fruit Street School takes great pride in being a part of the school environment.
