NBRS Badge for Barret Traditional Middle School

Barret Traditional Middle School - Louisville, KY

Barret students leaving from another successful day of school.

Barret students leaving from another successful day of school.

Barret Traditional Middle School has been successful over the years because we have learned the power of high expectations. We strive for excellence in everything we do, which includes holding all Barret stakeholders - students, staff, caregivers, coaches, and community members - to very high standards. We recognize that it is not enough to have high expectations, so we also communicate them and provide stakeholders with the tools they need to be successful. We have found that when high expectations are clearly communicated, whether around academics, behavior, athletics, or character, the Barret community will rise to meet them. Our teachers are expected to be experts in their content and demonstrate their willingness to be lifelong learners through professional learning and active participation in weekly Professional Learning Communities. Our students are expected to take ownership of their learning and be engaged in their own school experience, participating in extra-curricular opportunities, community service, and regular reviews of their own performance. Eighth-graders are expected to present a Student Defense of Learning that allows them to reflect on their growth as learners and uses artifacts from their years at Barret to support their claim that they are ready to go to high school. Families are expected to be active partners and sign a commitment form each year that details the ways in which we work together with caregivers to support student success. Striving for excellence is so ingrained into the fiber of our program that is has become simply known as The Barret Way, Every Day.
