Scientific Exploration in the Outdoor Classroom.

Roslyn Road Elementary School is a neighborhood school in the village of Barrington, northwest of Chicago, Illinois. Our school's strength is its sense of community. Students, teachers, and parents work together toward the common goal of furthering the learning of each student. Awarded a National Blue Ribbon in 2013, Roslyn has since embraced a philosophy of visible learning that has enhanced our approach to teaching and learning. Each lesson begins with clearly stated learning targets that are verbally discussed and visually illustrated with the universal symbol of a target. As students work through lessons, they are asked to periodically assess their perceptions of where their understandings fall on the target. At the end of each lesson, a meta-cognitive discussion occurs that not only checks for understanding and mastery of the topic but also delves into aspects of how students approached their learning and what strategies were successful in helping them understand the content. This approach has helped our teachers better understand how students move through the progressions of learning, and has provided our students with a stronger sense of ownership over their own learning. Roslyn Road is a collaborative environment where students work together along with our teaching staff to become better learners each and every day.
