NBRS Badge for Fredericksburg Elementary School
Fredericksburg Elementary School - Fredericksburg, IA
Fredericksburg Elementary finds success by building a culture of literacy.
At Fredericksburg Elementary, located in northeast Iowa, you will find: positive, caring relationships; rigorous instruction to build stamina; flexibility and teamwork to help where needed; high expectations that extend to the lunchroom, bus, and playground; emphasis on each student; and a culture of literacy.
Data drives our instruction and focus. Low FAST scores challenged us and prompted change. We formed a reading team, trained them, and then implemented weekly progress monitoring for students not meeting benchmarks, adjusting interventions week by week. Currently, we are implementing an intense, new literacy curriculum. Our enthusiasm and positive approach is contagious. We now have high levels of students meeting benchmark, as well as high amounts of growth for our kids on the FAST screener.
Reading Buddies, held every other week, pairs older and younger students reading to each other, allowing increased collaboration time for teachers. Daily Cougar Time has been very beneficial, targeting literacy gaps for every student. A robust Reading Counts program adds to our culture of literacy. "Reading is Fun" month, "Family Reading Night", and "Dads and Doughnuts" involve families.
Our literacy efforts are impacted positively by consistent PBIS and Character Counts which foster respect, resilience, and a growth mindset. iPads and Chromebooks in the classrooms have increased students' independence as they read, learn, create, and collaborate.
Being nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School is a great honor and encourages us to continue our focus on literacy.
