DSST: Byers Middle School students building relationships

DSST: Byers Middle School students building relationships

Just seven years ago, our school building was empty and abandoned, without a student or teacher inside it. After the local community fought so hard to bring our school to life, our students, the DSST: Byers falcons, have worked day-in and day-out to live our core values, build relationships across lines of difference, and succeed together as a diverse, inclusive, high-achieving community. We are honored to become a National Blue Ribbon School, proud of being a part of DSST Public Schools, and grateful to be a Denver Public School.

There are innumerable decisions, systems, and actions we have taken to achieve success. First and foremost, we commit to living our values and building healthy, dynamic relationships and teams. To us, values must be lived daily in our words and actions and not just posted on the wall. All adults intentionally get to know our students and leverage structures like advisory and community meetings to build a rigorous and joyful school culture that fosters high achievement and a sense of belonging. Teachers meet weekly in teams and refine their practice continuously through coaching in order to unleash our students' potential. Data from purposeful assessments help us answer questions like these daily: Are students learning? Who is? Who isn't? What will we do next? Finally, we tenaciously pursue equity. Not all of our students start off with the same advantages. ALL students can be successful if we set high expectations and provide high support for each student to reach a rigorous bar.
