Orchestra, singers, and guitar students during our state bicentennial celebration

Most magnet schools have a special focus; Baldwin Arts and Academics Magnet School's curriculum, however, has two that are intertwined, supporting middle school education that gives our grades six through eight students a strong academic background while allowing them to grow creatively through the arts. Academic coursework at Baldwin provide a rigorous curriculum that encourages students to take honors and advance classes, leading the way to advance-placement and dual-enrollment courses when they enter high school. Most of the students in our school also take one or two arts electives, selecting from band, choral, drama, musical theater, creative writing, dance with a focus on classical ballet, piano, orchestra, classical guitar, and visual arts. These student artists are expected to master music theory, musical composition, and research into different genres of arts while becoming masters of their chosen arts area. The focus on academics requires these same students to conquer advanced mathematics for their age, along with the study of language, science, writing, and literature. Many students use this dual curriculum as a springboard to choosing careers that require advance studies and academic achievement within the realm of a creative thought process. During a time when it is easy to lose a student, our dual magnet program encourages our students to embrace learning in an environment that addresses all of their needs and desires, giving them a sense of self that will last a lifetime.
