Saint Thomas the Apostle Graduates Celebrate Achievements

Saint Thomas the Apostle Graduates Celebrate Achievements

In an effort to meet the challenges that a 21st Century education demands, Saint Thomas the Apostle has undertaken a complete restructuring of its curricula, instruction, assessments, time-on-task scheduling, and classroom design. This transformation has enabled the school to provide student-centered, differentiated instruction and individualized learning opportunities utilizing 21st Century technology and initiatives. Active, meaningful participation in the governance process occurs on a daily and ongoing basis through our leadership program.

A block schedule instituted in fifth through eighth grade allows for a more flexible and productive classroom environment. Language arts and math increased class time from 180 minutes to 300 minutes per week. This schedule, in conjunction with the implementation of interactive SMART technology in all classrooms, allows teachers to use more process-oriented strategies and students to participate interactively.

Finally, one of our finest accomplishments was to become the first Catholic school in New Jersey to integrate Stephen Covey's THE LEADER IN ME principles. This has been a transformational process for Saint Thomas the Apostle School. Students take on roles within the school that are traditionally assigned to staff. From student-led morning prayers and announcements, to student-led school events, a newly shared vision was created, empowering students to embrace leadership roles.
