NBRS Badge for Farmland Elementary School
Farmland Elementary School - Rockville, MD
Farmland ES
Farmland's location near the National Institutes of Health and Washington, DC brings families from around the world to our school for varying periods of time. This has resulted in a 20% mobility rate and a 30% population of ESOL students. The goal of Farmland is for all students to achieve at least one year's growth, with a focus on our ESOL students. ESOL teachers plan with grade level teams, and a monthly newsletter for parents is published on upcoming learning and events.
Growth Mindset has become fundamental to the success of our school. It is also part of the staff professional development using the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success by Carol Dweck. We have been emphasizing the ability of students to demonstrate understanding and reasoning, with lessons that promote critical and creative thinking. Each student has access to a Chromebook, with apps such as Google Classroom which allows teachers to electronically assign and monitor student work. Critical thinking is encouraged by using Mind Mup (a pre-writing tool) and creative thinking by using Lucid Press (which provides unique ways to publish student work).
Family involvement is encouraged with events such as Family Fun Nights (to build friendships and relationships), Take Your Parent to School Night (an interactive evening), and International Night (to highlight our variety of cultures). Farmland has three Learning for Independence (LFI) classes for highly impacted students, and friendships with general education students are fostered through the LFI Buddies program. As often as possible, LFI classes are joined with general education classes for special learning opportunities.
