Patriotism and Proud Citizens at EC Killin Elementary School
Edward C. Killin Elementary School, also known as EC Killin or ECK, is located on the subtropical island of Okinawa, Japan and is part of the Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA) Pacific South District. EC Killin, home of the Geckos, serves approximately 500 Sure Start through Fifth Grade, culturally diverse students from all military branches and civilians supporting the military mission. There is pride from students, staff, parents, and stakeholders in being a unique part of the Gecko Family, where we all value a safe but challenging learning environment, an environment where we encourage our students' to strive for social, emotional, and academic excellence. Despite military demands on our service-members overseas, there is a strong presence in our school throughout the school day. PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization) events, before and after school clubs, and Open Door classroom policies allow for multiple opportunities to be actively involved in the school. The administrators' vision and commitment to a schedule that allows teachers to work in partnerships and shared leadership responsibilities have contributed to the transforming of "my students" to "our students" across EC Killin. As "One DODEA,"EC Killin has passionately embraced and flourished with the introduction of College and Career Readiness Standards for Mathematics and are paving the way by using the College Career Readiness Standards for all curricular areas. Educators throughout the school can be found working collaboratively within teams and departments to analyze student data, increase classroom strategies, and sustaining our continuous school improvement. "Go, Go, Geckos!"
