Read aloud in third grade, a daily activity

Marengo Valley School is a unique little country school located 12 miles south of Ashland, Wisconsin. Community members have always valued family, faith, and school. Our students have consistently scored at or above grade level on state and district assessments for many years. We are a K-5 school with approximately 185 students, and one of our biggest challenges has been meeting and exceeding students' needs with such a small staff, as well as limited resources and services. Our highly qualified teachers have overcome these challenges by differentiating curriculum through guided reading instruction, Title I assistance, and Gifted and Talented opportunities. Most students have two parents in the household with large families and a strong religious affiliation. Our students all know each other and have many relatives that are classmates. It is common to see several parents, grandparents, and younger siblings in our building each day, helping out in classrooms, on the playground, in our school gardens, bringing snacks to children and staff, or just visiting. The strong sense of togetherness between families and staff keeps a consistent communication connection. Families value education, and expect their children to be well mannered, work hard, and trust the staff to meet and exceed student needs. This teamwork was always a strength of our school, and embracing the RtI model continues to help staff members take ownership of all students in the building, which doesn't seem like a new idea to us here at Marengo Valley School.
