SWMS students enjoy a variety of activities in and outside the classroom.

Sixth Ward Middle School is surrounded by the swamps of Choctaw, a small community several miles to the north of Thibodaux, Louisiana. Our Sixth Ward community has, for many years, been known to place an emphasis on the education of its children which promotes a strong bond between our school and the community and helps create a culture of excellence. In the same way that many schools take pride in their athletics programs, our Sixth Ward school and community takes pride in its high level of achievement on state measures of academic performance. In the past several years, student achievement has grown considerably as we have placed a clearly defined focus on implementing authentic literacy in every classroom, every day. Our teachers maintain the highest expectations for all students as they build educational opportunities that incorporate meaningful reading, evidence-based writing, and rich, academic discussions. We believe that an essential curriculum focused on literacy and delivered by knowledgeable and caring teachers is the most direct path to school improvement. Systems and structures have been created through the work of our dedicated and experienced staff to rapidly support all students as they are constantly challenged to perform up to their fullest potential. Inside and outside the classroom, our goal at Sixth Ward Middle is to take the elementary students we receive in sixth grade and have them leave eighth grade fully prepared for success in high school.
