NBRS Badge for Woodlawn Middle School
Woodlawn Middle School - Long Grove, IL
Differentiated instruction according to student need.
Woodlawn Middle School is located in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago with a student body that runs the gamut of socio-economic backgrounds. The faculty strives to help all students master the same rigorous standards and strives to provide that the proper scaffolds are in place to ensure that all students are reaching their highest potential. Because Woodlawn is a professional learning community, the focus is on learning rather than teaching. Teachers work collaboratively on teams using student data to create timely lessons and to drive instructional decisions.
Woodlawn Middle School puts students at the forefront of 21st Century learning and was recognized as an Apple Distinguished School in 2015 for its use of education technology and 1:1 environment. Coupled with the adoption of new standards, Woodlawn has transformed the classroom environment to better suit the needs and skills of students as they prepare to interact in an ever changing world. The classrooms and 1:1 iPad initiative allow teachers to differentiate for students of all needs while using equipment that engages the students with authentic tasks that make real world connections.
Teachers at Woodlawn partake in multiple layers of professional development to ensure that their craft is continually improving via exploration of best practices. Job embedded professional development is provided through the building's seven instructional coaches who work alongside teachers to research, plan, and reflect on instruction. Students benefit from teachers' constant refinement of their practices.
Woodlawn Middle School truly epitomizes the district motto: "Every child, every school, every day".
