Living our mission of Achievement NOW at Centennial Elementary

Living our mission of Achievement NOW at Centennial Elementary

Four years ago a transformation of mindset began to occur at Centennial Elementary. Sitting in one of the highest crime areas in the state, Centennial was one of the lowest performing schools in the state and a place students, families, and staff did not want to be. However, a new mission of “Achievement NOW” was unveiled and a belief that all students can and will achieve began to drive all decisions for Centennial Elementary. The mindset of all stakeholders shifted from a fixed mindset of being stuck to a growth mindset that anything is possible and education opens doors to opportunities.

The turnaround included a commitment from staff to establish high expectations and work to engage students while meeting these expectations. A commitment from parents included getting students to school on time, reading every night, and helping with homework. A commitment from students included changing their mindset from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset knowing that with hard work they can be anything they want to be.

Despite having a 95% free and reduced lunch rate, Centennial students are now performing among the top schools in the state. In addition, Centennial has increased its student enrollment by 55% as families are selecting Centennial to educate their children. Finally, there is a renewed pride among students, families, and staff as they are proud to be Centennial Panthers. Our entire community stands united behind our school mission. Centennial Elementary is proving that zip codes no longer determine academic success. Achievement NOW!
